Born in 1968 to parents that were frequent bowlers, Johnny spent his early childhood performing table magic for the bowling league at his hometown alley in Palm Beach County, Florida. Later he was accepted into the Actors' Repertory Theatre Company where he received classical theatre training and toured under the directorship of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Longing for something different, he joined Ta Fantastika, the Cirque Du Soleil of puppetry and one of the only three professional black light theatre companies in the world. After a season of trotting the globe with life-sized puppets, he returned home to form The Comedy Squad, a hip improv comedy troupe. The troupe wrote, produced and performed a weekly sketch and improv comedy show at a downtown dive called the Arts Bar, a trendy hang out for local talent. He later acted in television and film having worked as a stand-in and body double for Sylvester Stallone.
Realizing that comedy was what he wanted out of life, he fused his diverse background in entertainment with his rock star mentality and cartoon charisma to form one of the most popular
solo comedy acts on the circuit today. In his show, Johnny is a straight man to some of the funniest partners in show business, his audience. The show is highly interactive as Johnny brings selected audience members to the stage to join him in spontaneous antics. "You never know what the audience is going to do or say and I respond to that. So you never know what I am going to do or say. It keeps the show fresh, fun and new," says Johnny.
His performance style blends stand up style comedy with the variety arts and his eccentric humor and unscripted antics have earned him widespread recognition as one of the most original comic performers today. Weaving comic wit amid impressive feats of escapism, fire artistry and the supernatural has won Johnny Phoenix the title of "Danger Comedian." "If people walk away thinking they too can laugh at the impossible, then I've done my job," concludes Johnny.
The Daily News raves, "Johnny Phoenix is highly hilarious. Extremely entertaining. A cross between Steve Martin and Harry Houdini. With material suited and customized for the audience at hand, his fans range from bikers to surgeons, singles to families, young to old, returning over and over, year after year to witness his comical antics. Why? Two simple reasons. First, each show is filled with frequent improvisations and audience interaction which make every performance a special, once-in-a-lifetime event. And second, he is funny as hell."
